March 13, 2020 in Orenburg at the final meeting of the international scientific-practical conference “Tenth Bolshakov Readings. Orenburg Territory as a Historical and Cultural Phenomenon ”, a constituent meeting was held to create the Orenburg branch of the Russian Historical Society. Its initiators were the Orenburg State Pedagogical University, the head of the Department of Russian History, Doctor of Historical Sciences, professor of the OGPU Sergey Lyubichankovsky and other historians of Orenburg, who had previously turned to the chairman of the Russian Historical Society, Sergei Naryshkin, and secured his support.
The constituent assembly was attended by heads and representatives of universities, museums, archives and libraries of Orenburg, school teachers, local historians and visiting historians from different regions of the country. An honored guest of the event was Konstantin Mogilevsky, member of the Presidium of the Russian Historical Society, executive director of the History of the Fatherland Foundation. Welcoming the meeting participants, OGPU Rector Svetlana Aleshina noted the importance of the step to create a RIO branch. A historical school is strong in Orenburg, and in particular at the OGPU; historical scholars unite free researchers around themselves, including those starting out from among students and schoolchildren. And the work of the RIO department will make it possible to give this activity an even more orderly and focused character.
The members of the constituent assembly unanimously voted for the candidacy of Sergei Lyubichankovsky for the post of head of the regional branch of the Russian Historical Society. The Russian historical society was recreated in the traditions of the pre-revolutionary Imperial Russian historical society on June 20, 2012. Its founders were 27 leading Russian institutions of education, science and culture, including the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov St. Petersburg State University, MGIMO, State Historical Museum, State Tretyakov Gallery, Hermitage, Russian State Library and many others. To date, RIO branches have already been established in more than 50 regions of the country. According to the Charter, the purpose of RIO is to unite the efforts of society, the state, scientists and history buffs to form an all-Russian historical culture based on objective study, coverage and popularization of domestic and world history, and the preservation of national memory. The History of the Fatherland Foundation is a non-profit organization created by decree of the President of the Russian Federation on April 6, 2016. The main goal of the fund is to popularize Russian history in the Russian Federation and abroad, preserve the historical heritage and traditions of the peoples of Russia, as well as support historical education programs. The chairman of the Russian Historical Society and the Council of the History of the Fatherland Foundation is Sergei Naryshkin.
